Pinoy math wizards shine at 2 competitio­ns in China

Young Filipino math wizards took home medals in two tough internatio­nal math contests held in China last week.

Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematic­s Trainers Guild- Philippine­s, said the country posted a decent performanc­e at the China Girls Mathematic­al Olympiad held in Guangdong province in China from Aug. 10 to 14, one of the “toughest math contests today, winning a harvest of five medals, two silvers and three bronzes.”

Chua pointed out that all five delegates of Team Philippine­s won a medal.

The silver medalists were Andrea Jaba and Jinger Chong, both students of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila.

Bagging bronze medals were Isabel Jocyn Villanueva of PAREF Woodrose School in Muntinlupa, Natalie Beatrice Dy of St. John’s Institute in Bacolod City, and Tiffany Mae Ong of Immaculate Conception Academy in San Juan City.

Participat­ing countries in the CGMO include the US, Singapore, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Macau, Hong Kong, the Philippine­s and host Chi- na, which topped the contest.

Meanwhile, in the 2015 World Mathematic­s Invitation­al, the Philippine team won three gold and 19 bronze medals as well as 30 merit awards.

The 2015 WMI was held last Aug. 8 to12 in Guilin, China.

Participat­ing countries were China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, Macau and the Philippine­s.

Philip Ezekiel Tan III from the Philippine Science High School (Main), Ayezza Myrisse Candelario from Negros Occidental National Science High School, and Eric Fabian Mendez Jr. from PSHS (Bicol Region) brought home gold medals.
