Pinoy math wizards shine at 2 competitions in China
Young Filipino math wizards took home medals in two tough international math contests held in China last week.
Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild- Philippines, said the country posted a decent performance at the China Girls Mathematical Olympiad held in Guangdong province in China from Aug. 10 to 14, one of the “toughest math contests today, winning a harvest of five medals, two silvers and three bronzes.”
Chua pointed out that all five delegates of Team Philippines won a medal.
The silver medalists were Andrea Jaba and Jinger Chong, both students of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila.
Bagging bronze medals were Isabel Jocyn Villanueva of PAREF Woodrose School in Muntinlupa, Natalie Beatrice Dy of St. John’s Institute in Bacolod City, and Tiffany Mae Ong of Immaculate Conception Academy in San Juan City.
Participating countries in the CGMO include the US, Singapore, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Macau, Hong Kong, the Philippines and host Chi- na, which topped the contest.
Meanwhile, in the 2015 World Mathematics Invitational, the Philippine team won three gold and 19 bronze medals as well as 30 merit awards.
The 2015 WMI was held last Aug. 8 to12 in Guilin, China.
Participating countries were China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, Macau and the Philippines.
Philip Ezekiel Tan III from the Philippine Science High School (Main), Ayezza Myrisse Candelario from Negros Occidental National Science High School, and Eric Fabian Mendez Jr. from PSHS (Bicol Region) brought home gold medals.
