SLMC-GC spearheads Critical Care Summit
The St. Luke’s Medical Center – Global City (SLMC-GC) Institute for Neurosciences is spearheading a Summit for Critical Care among multispecialty doctors and medical staff titled “Critical Care: Can’t Do It Alone” from Dec. 1 to 3 at its Henry Sy Sr. Auditorium.
The three-day event will feature workshops prepared by the department of anesthesia and lectures that cover a wide range of critical care services including cardiovascular, neurological, pulmonary, nephrological and surgical concerns. It will discuss the vital roles of pharmacists, dietitians, nurses and therapists in the delivery of care.
Critical care is a specialized branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and management of life-threatening conditions requiring sophisticated organ support and invasive monitoring. It is generally identified with the intensive care units which are manned by intensivists of a hospital but may encompass even those services given while the patients are in transit, in the emergency room or even in the private room.
Critical care is challenging for every hospital staff as this type of service involves some of the most important and timely decision-making and comes with high complexity in assessing, manipulating, and supporting vital organ systems and preventing system failures. It often requires a higher staff-to-patient ratio and immediate access to advanced medical resources and equipment that is not routinely available elsewhere in the hospital setting.
The pre-convention activity will be facilitated by the SLMC-GC department of anesthesiology. It features a workshop on central and arterial line access, as well as basic and advanced airway management with emphasis on identifying the common pitfalls that transform a relatively manageable airway to difficult one.
