Fil-Am kills Fil-Am wife, stepson in Illinois

- By JOSEPH LARIOSA

CHICAGO – Although Filipino American Lailani Uy Trejo was badly hit by her husband, she was still able to call 911, saying she was “dying” and “bleed- ing” at about 2:50 a.m. on Nov. 30 in their home in suburban Beach Park, Illinois.

When the police officers arrived, her husband Armando Trejo Jr. simply said the children were playing with the phone when they had placed the 911 call.

The police did not buy it, though, and insisted on checking the house, where they found a bloody bat and two bodies with “extreme marks” and an “extensive amount of blood.”

Trejo, 47, was charged last Monday with first-degree murder and aggravated battery at the Lake County circuit court, which set bail at $5 million.

Lake County State Attorney Mike Nerheim said Trejo could face life in prison if found guilty.

Police said Trejo killed Lailani, 43, and his stepson Patrick Cruz Uy, 14. He also reportedly beat his mother, who tried to intervene during the scuffle, breaking her arm in the process.

The police added that Patrick alerted Trejo’s parents, who were staying with them. Trejo’s elderly father was at home but was unable to help.

Assistant State Attorney Joe Zeit said during the bond hearing that when the female caller stopped talking, the 911 operator heard a pinging noise similar to the sound of a swinging baseball bat.

The police said Trejo admitted the attacks during interrogation.

Leilani was a home caregiver while Trejo worked as a machine operator. Patrick was attending Waukegan High School in Illinois.
