What’s your most memorable Christmas?

- By MONS ROMULO

Christmas is undoubtedly the most wonderful time of the year for some of us. The bright lights, festive Christma s decorations, happy smiles and nippy weather make the season extra special. Every Christmas is very memorable to me because it’s spent with my loved ones. I asked some personalities to share their most memorable Christmas.

Senator Bongbong Marcos

My most memorable Christmas was one spent 40,000 feet above ground. I was studying abroad and because it was exam time, I ended up flying home on Christmas Eve. I still remember the pilot making an announcement that everyone on the plane would be given free champagne! That was nice of him to do so.

Christmas to me is being with family. Since my parents are based in Subic I make sure I spend it with them. Of course, the most memorab le Christmas was when our family were all together since my sisters are now all in the States.

For as long as I can remember I celebrate Christmas Eve noche

buena with the family at home. A tradition now, we begin our celebration with a Mass, soon after we all line up to welcome and kiss the baby Jesus. We then gather and eat delicious food with all the apos and our extended family. This to me is special.

My most memorable Christmas was in 2009. We decided to spend the holidays in England with my husband’s family. It was our first time to do so. It was lovely to be able to experience their traditions and to spend Christmas in hot chocolate-worthy weather. It was also my son’s first time to spend Christmas there and I loved seeing him enjoy making his first Christmas cake with his grandmother.

Atty. Lorna Kapunan

My first most memorab le Christmas was in 1975 when we had our firstborn son Tokkoy, then only 10 months old, await the arrival of Santa Claus ( his dad) bearing Tonka toys bigger than him. I now am widowed and have five sons and three grandsons and every Christmas is as memorable — except the toys are now for big boys and I am now their Santa Claus. Kids will always be kids.

Our family is quite musically inclined. Everyone either plays a musical instrument or is capable of carrying a tune. My Christmas memories always centered around songs and performances by everyone. We have an annual family gathering and we use this time to dance, and sing to our hearts content. This I will always cherish and hold close to my heart.

I make sure to make every year a most unforgettable one. As a kid, I would spend it in coldweather Baguio, going up the mountains during the day and having a feast with my family at night. This year, I’m trying something different. Currently on an Insight Vacation going around the Christmas markets in Germany, Austria and Italy, alone. I’m with so many people all year round that being alone is also quite replenishing to the soul. I want to be able to reflect and have some quiet time, to be thankful for the year that was, and get myself ready for the year that’s coming very soon. Have a merry, magical and introspectively memorable Christmas.
