DepEd to schools: Avoid politics in graduation rites
The Department of Education (DepEd) has reminded school officials not to turn graduation rites into a political event.
In a department order, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the end of school year rites should be an appropriate and solemn ceremony befitting the learners and their parents and should not be used as a political forum. In a separate statement sent to
The STAR, the DepEd reiterated its “Clean Schools, Clean Elections” program, which aims to ensure that schools and teachers are protected from overt politicking.
“DepEd calls on organizers of political rallies and public meetings to always be mindful of the environment and be responsible in cleaning and removing the campaign materials after the rally or meeting,” said the agency.
“We also ask them not to hold political rallies and public meetings during school days while classes are ongoing. DepEd reminds them to secure first the
necessary permits from the proper local government units pursuant to the requirement of local ordinances on the issuance of the permits,” it added. Teachers were also reminded to be nonpartisan.
In the department order, Luistro said this year’s graduation rites will focus on the K to 12 program as a transformative vehicle for local and national development.
“Through the provision of quality education, the K to 12 Basic Education Program develops and harnesses the skills and competencies of the Filipino youth that will lead to human and community development,” read the order.
Luistro said those who will finish Grade 10 will take part in a “moving-up” ceremony, which he said should be simple and only involve learners, their parents and the school.
Graduation rites will be held for those who will finish Grade 6 and Grade 12 for the early implementers of the senior high school program.
“(It) should be simple but meaningful affairs which encourage civil rights, a sense of community and personal responsibility,” Luistro said.
“While these rites mark a milestone in the life of the learners, these should be conducted without excessive spending, extravagant attire or extraordinary venue,” he added.
