Singapore Airlines mulls expanding Phl presence
Singapore Airlines is looking to increase its presence in the Philippines to take advantage of the country’s growing economy and travel market.
Mak Swee Wah, executive vice president for commercial at Singapore Airlines told reporters during the carrier’s celebration of its 50th anniversary, the company is encouraged by the Philippines’ economic growth and rising number of travellers.
“I think the Philippine economy is one of those relatively healthy, looking around Southeast Asia, so we are quite confident the travel market will continue to grow. We have already quite a big cooperation here together with our subsidiary (SilkAir) with 52 flights. We hope to continue to be able to grow both in terms of frequency as well as in higher capacity aircraft,” Mak said.
He said the Philippines’ healthy travel market makes the country an important part of Singapore Airlines’ network.
Transport Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said in the same event the recent ratification of Protocols 5 and 6 of the ASEAN Multilateral Agreement on Air Services or Open Skies Agreement by the Philippines opens opportunities to local carriers as well as other airlines in Southeast Asia including Singapore Airlines to offer more flights in the region.
“What is the implication of the ratification of the Philippines? This will allow foreign airlines, ASEAN airlines to freely fly in. In effect, we have more competition which should drive fares lower, better for consumers,” Abaya said.
The agreement, signed by President Aquino on Feb. 3, allows designated carriers of ASEAN countries to operate unlimited flights between capitals.
While the ASEAN Open Skies Agreement provides opportunities to offer new flights, Singapore Airlines intends to focus on destinations currently being served in the Philippines for now.
“Other points will be something for the future to decide,” Mak said.
