QC students join Rotary art contest
More than 10,000 public elementary and high school students took part yesterday in the Rotary Club of Kamuning’s 22nd Alay ng Rotary sa Araw ng Kabataan (Rotary Alay) contest.
The event is an annual art and cultural development competition.
In his speech, Rotary Club of Kamuning (RoCK) president Siegfried “Yeye” Manaois said the Rotary Alay has “produced several talents who are reaping honors here and abroad, including Koreen Medina who won in a singing competition a few years ago.”
Manaois said the exposure and confidence gained by Medina from joining RoCK (District 3780) helped her bagged the third runner- up plum in the Miss Intercontinental Queen of Asia and Oceania 2013 held in Magdeburg, Germany.
Medina was also the grand prize winner of the Coca-Cola Music Talent Search in 2011.
With this year ’ s theme “Matalinong Kabataan, Pagasa ng Bayan,” participants competed in the drum and lyre competition, rondalla, vocal solo singing, chorale singing, on-the-spot painting and interpretative dancing.
The Rotary Alay was held in cooperation with the Rotary International District 3780, Quezon City schools, Department of Education and the Quezon City government under Mayor Herbert Bautista, former president of the RoCK.
Private sponsors include Mighty Corp. and Union Bank of the Philippines.
Rotary International District 3780 governor Reynaldo David said the programs of the rotary aim to uplift the welfare of the youth.
“The rotary invests in the youth because we believe they are the future of the country,” he said.
