Metro Retail opens 47th store in Samar
Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI), the retail arm of Cebu-based Vicsal Development Corp., recently opened the Super Metro Hypermarket in Calbayog City, Samar, the first store to be inaugurated in line with the company’s strategy to double its nationwide retailing footprint in the next five years.
The two-floor hypermarket in Calbayog City is MRSGI’s 27th store in the Visayas and 47th nationwide, according to MRSGI chairman and chief executive officer Frank Gaisano, who highlighted the company’s confidence in the growth potential of various cities outside Metro Manila.
“One of our strategic initiatives is to go to underserved ar- eas where there is a lot of room for growth,” said Gaisano.
The Super Metro Hypermarket is a one-stop community store that offers customers the convenience of a supermarket and department store combined, providing customers with a wide selection of food and general merchandise at competitive prices. It also features the company’s very own ancillary store, Metro Pharmacy.
“The hypermarket is our fastest growing format,” said Gaisano, who noted that the Calbayog hypermarket is their 15th in just three years. According to Euromonitor, MRSGI is the largest hypermarket operator in the Visayas in terms of retail sales value in 2014.
Calbayog City Mayor Ronald Aquino welcomed the store opening, saying it will help spur growth and development for the city’s 170,000 residents. “This important investment will be a big boost to our people’s livelihood,” Aquino added.
