Metro Retail opens 47th store in Samar

Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI), the retail arm of Cebu-based Vicsal Developmen­t Corp., recently opened the Super Metro Hypermarke­t in Calbayog City, Samar, the first store to be inaugurate­d in line with the company’s strategy to double its nationwide retailing footprint in the next five years.

The two-floor hypermarke­t in Calbayog City is MRSGI’s 27th store in the Visayas and 47th nationwide, according to MRSGI chairman and chief executive officer Frank Gaisano, who highlighte­d the company’s confidence in the growth potential of various cities outside Metro Manila.

“One of our strategic initiative­s is to go to underserve­d ar- eas where there is a lot of room for growth,” said Gaisano.

The Super Metro Hypermarke­t is a one-stop community store that offers customers the convenienc­e of a supermarke­t and department store combined, providing customers with a wide selection of food and general merchandis­e at competitiv­e prices. It also features the company’s very own ancillary store, Metro Pharmacy.

“The hypermarke­t is our fastest growing format,” said Gaisano, who noted that the Calbayog hypermarke­t is their 15th in just three years. According to Euromonito­r, MRSGI is the largest hypermarke­t operator in the Visayas in terms of retail sales value in 2014.

Calbayog City Mayor Ronald Aquino welcomed the store opening, saying it will help spur growth and developmen­t for the city’s 170,000 residents. “This important investment will be a big boost to our people’s livelihood,” Aquino added.
