DOH urges bets: Take break from heat

- By MAYEN JAYMALIN

The Department of Health ( DOH) yesterday advised candidates and their supporters to take a break during the campaign to avoid heat stroke.

Health Secretary Janette Garin said if possible, candidates should schedule their activities and avoid the peak of the sun’s heat.

“Avoiding ( activities from) 10 a. m. to 2 p.m., if possible, will be good. This is because this is the peak of ultraviolet (UV) radiation,” Garin said. “They should schedule heavy duty activities at the beginning or end of the day, when it’s cooler.”

Heat stroke can occur when the body cannot release the excessive heat by sweating because of dehydration or a humid environment.

A person suffering from heat stroke experiences flushed skin, fainting, dizziness, weakness, headache, very high fever of 41°C, rapid heartbeat, convulsion and unconsciousness.

Garin said candidates and their supporters must make sure that they are always hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding tea, coffee, soda and alcohol.

She also urged them to wear a widebrimmed hat and long-sleeved clothes.

Candidates are expected to give their all in the final weeks of the campaign period.

“In the event that you feel something, especially dizziness and exhaustion, you have to seek immediate medical attention,” Garin added.
