5 dead in Quezon road mishaps

CAMP NAKAR, Lucena City – Five persons died in separate road accidents in the towns of Padre Burgos and Sariaya, both in Quezon province, on Saturday.

In the same day, six members of a family were injured when their vehicle slammed into a mausoleum in Balatan town, Camarines Sur, and six were hurt in another accident in Sorsogon.

Three of the fatalities were recorded in Padre Burgos, according to Quezon police officer-in-charge Senior Superinten­dent Eugene Paguirigan.

Investigat­ion showed three persons were riding a motorcycle when they hit a sport utility vehicle (SUV) in Barangay Danlagad.

Motorcycle driver Jerry Villareal, 44, and his passengers Efren Mercadejas, 58, and Julie Reamico, 35, died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, identified as Filomeno Capistrano, 60, and his two passengers were not hurt in the accident.

Authoritie­s have yet to identify the fatalities in the accident that occurred in Sariaya town.

In Camarines Sur, Alvin Banaria, 47; his wife Maria Cecilia, 42, and their children Christian John, 15; John Rey Huben, 10; Kathleen, 5, and Clibeth were brought to the RMC Hospital for treatment after their Mitsubishi Adventure hit the Pascual Mausoleum in Balatan public cemetery.

Bicol police spokespers­on Senior Inspector Malou Calubaquib said the Banarias came from Nabua town and headed for Barangay Siramag when they figured in the accident at around 11 a.m.

Investigat­ors said the vehicle developed engine trouble, causing Alvin to lose control of the wheel.

In Sorsogon, motorcycle driver Ricky Belmonte, 34, and his passengers Purita Espinea,66; Josefina Rosay, 70; Henara Encinares, 65; Aida Belmonte, 61, and Jeffrey Hitosis, 24, were taken to Gubat District Hospital for treatment after they were hit by a truck in Pilar town.

Truck driver Danilo Mabini, 59, was held for questionin­g after the accident that occurred at around 6:30 a.m., according to Calubaquib.

The motorcycle rolled over and hit a bystander identified as Pedro Paniergo Jr., 48.
