Hot message for summer: Hydrate!

- By ANTHONY SUNTAY

Summe r is here!

I played my first round of golf the other week, and even though I was expecting an extremely hot day, I was surprised that the heat was almost unbearable! I guess global warming is now here in a big way.

During the round, I remembered the meeting I had the previous day with my friends from Gatorade, who were proudly talking about their banner 2015 as they looked forward to more breakthroughs this year.

So I made it a point to be properly hydrated the entire round, and tried to get under the shade whenever possible.

But going back to the Gatorade meeting, I was very impressed with their achievements for the past 12 months.

From the international arena, they had the 23rd anniversary of Michael Jordan’s classic “Be Like Mike” campaign; the 1992 TV spot was the beginning of the union that propelled both brand and brand ambassador.

Gatorade also celebrated their golden anniversary in the commercial market. Founded by a team of University of Florida scientists in the campuses of what was then a backwater town as a replenishment system for body fluids lost during bouts of intense physical exertion, it is now universally accepted as the leading sports drink in all of major sports.

Last year, Gatorade also introduced its latest product, White Lightning, and the launch was locally supported with the addition of four top athletes into the Gatorade celebrity roster — volleyball stars Alyssa Valdez from Ateneo and Mika Reyes from De La Salle and basketball’s Chris Banchero of Alaska Aces and Jeron Teng of the Green Archers. They have since added baller Terence Romeo, and spikers Ara Galang, Gia Morado, Jaja Santiago, and EJ Laure.

In late November, the brand had its inaugural Gatorade Run, an 11-kilometer and 22-kilometer road competition that attracted over 5,000 runners!

Dehydration causes fatigue, headache, cramps, and slow fat burn, and Gatorade provides the replenishment that professionals, weekend warriors, and fitness enthusiasts need.

“Performing at your peak in any sport isn’t easy. It takes a lot of hard work, and inevitably, sweat is the byproduct of that. And that’s what Gatorade is for, to make sure that as you sweat, you rehydrate and replenish properly so you can last longer and perform better,” said Tony Atayde, Pepsico Philippines marketing manager for hydration.

So, don’t forget to hydrate this summer, especially when you’re outdoors and exercising.
