Timely answer to growing Filipino scooter-riding market

To meet the needs of the thriving number of scooters in the country, Shell Philippines unveiled recently their new range of scooter-specific engine oils at the Manila Hotel.

Through Shell’s comprehensive research and analysis, it was further found out that scooters were growing at a faster pace than other motorcycles.

“Since scooters are dry-clutch engines, we felt the need to come up with a new range of engine oils designed specifically for them,” said Shell Lubricants business manager Thailand & Philippines, Dennis Javier.

“Because of the ever-changing environment landscape, more people now prefer them because they are more fuel-efficient, smaller and more easy to maneuver,” he added.

The wide variety of product ranges cater to specific scooter users, and this line includes Shell Advance Ultra Scooter, Shell Advance AX7 Scooter, Shell Advance AX5 Scooter and Shell Advance Scooter Gear Oil.

These specialized lubricants are formulated to cool, clean and protect engines of automatic transmission scooters.

For one, the Shell Advance Ultra Scooter is 100-percent synthetic oil with a viscosity grade of 5W-40. It is for all modern scooters.

“This kind of oil is particularly made for those passionate scooter lovers who want real long-lasting engine and an oil that will last them longer, not to mention longer drain intervals,” Javier conveyed.

While the Shell Advance AX7 Scooter is synthetic-based with a viscosity grade of 10W-40. It is made for use in modern 4-stroke scooters fitted with a dry- type clutch system; and for modern 4-stroke scooters, they offer the Advance AX5 Scooter which has premium mineral with viscosity grade of 15W-40.

“Consumers, meanwhile, who use their scooters for work would prefer these mineral-based oils,” he shared.

Meantime, the Shell Advance Scooter Gear Oil with viscosity grade of 10W-40 is suitable for all gearbox of major scooter makes and models. It is best used with Advance lubricants.

Shell Advance Ultra Scooter comes in 1-liter containers while the Shell Advance AX5 and AX7 Scooter come in 0.8 litercontainers. The Shell Advance Scooter Gear Oil is available in 0.12- liter container. They are available in Shell retail stations and motorcycle parts and supply shops nationwide.

These scooter oils, like their counterparts for motorcycles, are made through Shell’s revolutionary PurePlus Technology and Active Cleansing Technology that guarantee a longer-lasting engine that brings out more power, smoother ride and increased fuel economy.

Scooter engines are different from motorcycle engines. They require a compatible oil that is low friction and has better oxidative stability.

Shell PurePlus Technology is a process of converting natural gas into crystal-clear base oil. The oil’s enhanced viscosity maintains performance in extreme and low temperatures. It flows rapidly for easier engine start-up and faster engine warm-up. It also reduces friction for better fuel economy.

Featuring “Active Cleansing Technology,” the synthetic lubricant cleans the engine and prevents build- up of dirt. Protection from engine deposits and sludge result in better defense against wear and corrosion, thus helping extend engine life and reduce maintenance costs.

More boost in savings for the consumer are also achieved because of less frequent top-ups, owing to Shell Advance’s lower volatility.

During the unveiling ceremony, executives said that the Philippines was the first market in Asia wherein they launched the full- range products. According to them, the country is in the top five global businesses for the lubricants giant.

In the country, sales of motorcycles and scooters last year increased 7.6 percent to 850,509 from 790,245 in 2014, according to statistics from the ASEAN Automotive Federation ( AAF). The production of motorcycle and scooters in the country also increased in 2015 by 5.4 percent to 795,840 from 755,184 in 2014. One-third of these sales come from scooters alone. That’s why the products’ arrival deemed the perfect fit.

“We see a very interested market and a highly involved sector in the Philippines,” said Serge Bernal, Shell Lubricants marketing manager Thailand & Philippines.

“It is exactly the right time to launch the full range of scooter oils,” he added.
