Mr. Gay World Phl dreams of getting married someday

- By Maridol Rañoa-Bismark

Mr. Gay World Philippines Christian Laxamana, the country’s representative to the Mr. Gay World pageant in Malta on April 19 to 23, has the courage of his convictions. He’s not supporting Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao’s senatorial bid in the May elections because the 30-year-old high school teacher is still smarting from the boxing champ’s stinging comment about gays.

After all, Christian’s family never judged him. He didn’t have to explain himself to his parents and siblings when he realized he was gay at age 15. This atmosphere of love and acceptance made Christian grow up into a confident person, unafraid to stand up for his beliefs.

The then teenaged Christian didn’t flinch when people called him names for being gay.

He was already earning his own keep even before he finished his Bachelor of Secondary Education degree.

“I was paying for my tuition,” Christian Chrisfair-skinned recalls.

Today, he has the respect of his teenaged students in Pampanga because Christian conducts himself with dignity.

“You have to respect yourself,” he explains.

Their smooth relationship with their teacher prompted some of Christian’s students to support him if Mr. Gay World has an Internet-based voting system.

But while he can use all the help he can get, Christian is well prepared for the big battle ahead.

He’s been training with the Kagandahang Flores group, which has been holding pageant camps for Bb. Pilipinas bets for the longest time.

He’ll compete against taller, more fair-skinned candidates, but Christian remains unfazed.

He only wants one thing: To bring home the crown.

His advocacy is as timely as it is relevant. Christian wants to fight HIV the way Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach does.

“I want to destroy the stigma on HIV patients and encourage people to get tested as early as possible. If you’re reactive, it can even prolong your life.”

The guy is walking the talk. Christian underwent testing and came out clean.

He’s dead serious about his health for another big reason. Christian plans to get married and have children of his own.

“I don’t think my being gay will be a problem as long as I fulfill my duties and responsibilities as a dad. At least I’m working hard for my kids.”

That won’t happen anytime soon, though. Christian prefers to prioritize his widowed dad and four siblings first.

After all, he won’t have a problem attracting the ladies.

Christian’s good looks landed him roles in teleseryes. He admits politely turning down a Bicolana’s marriage proposal.

That’s because he wants to be as real as possible.

He advises young people who want to come out of the closet to be as truthful as well.

“As long as you’re expressing yourself, and if you’re ready, go,” he says.

Take it from this can-do guy who wants only the best, not just for his family, but for the Philippines, which he has vowed to do proud come pageant day.
