Campaign against unsafe vehicles intensified

-

Meanwhile, to further enhance toll road safety, the Southern Tollways operators are intensifying their campaign against unsafe and non-road-worthy vehicles.

Road safety checkpoints are being set up at the approaches of select entry points of the Skyway System between Makati and Alabang, of SLEX between Alabang and Calamba and of Star Tollway between Sto. Tomas and Batangas City.

Teams of mechanics and traffic enforcers will randomly inspect vehicles that present road safety risks such as unsafe loading, busted lights and worn out tires.

Vehicles that fail the safety checklist will not be allowed to enter the toll road, or will be asked to go out at the nearest exit.

Through said campaign, the Southern Tollways operators hope to reduce road incidents and situations that cause delay and inconvenience to and even hurt other motorists.

The LTO-deputized patrollers of the Southern Tollways, together with representatives of the Department of Science and Technology, recently conducted the re- calibration of the speed and laser guns used at Skyway O&M Corp. (SOMCO), the Manila Toll Expressway Systems Inc ( MATES), and Star Tollway Corp. (STC), operators of the Skyway System, South Luzon Expressway ( SLEX) and Star Tollway in Batangas.

To maintain the efficiency of the speed machines, daytime calibration of the speed radars and nighttime calibration of TruCam Laser guns were done along SLEX.

Six speed machines for MATES, three each for SOMCO and STC were calibrated accordingly. The tollways speed limits are 60 kph minimum for all classes of vehicles; 80 kph maximum for trucks and buses and 100 kph maximum for cars or Class 1 vehicles.

To ensure a trouble-free and safe travel, motorists are reminded to keep their vehicles roadworthy, to strictly observe tollway traffic rules especially the speed limit rule.
