All set for biggest run in Asia

- By Yugel Losorata

Prominent individuals, including some from the Philippine showbiz industry, are expected to join this year’s Earth Day

Run touted as the biggest in its seven- year history. The 2016 edition happens simultaneously today in five cities around Asia, including Manila, where the run spans the high- end areas of Bonifacio Global City and McKinley West.

Instituted by the National Geographic Channel ( NGC), the run promoting both fitness and environmental care will gather thousands of so- called “Eco Warriors” in the cities of Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tai Chung. The Manila leg is expected to generate 20,000 participants or even more as the deadline for registration was extended until yesterday.

Fox International Channel’s spokesperson for Philippine office, Jude Turcuato, noted, “This is the biggest yet and we’re expecting a heavy turnout and a fruitful result to make this year’s edition another worthy cause for the environment.”

Earth Day Run 2016 is divided to four races, the shortest route being five kilometers and the longest at 42 kilometers. Gun start for the latter begins at 12 midnight today while the last set of runners starts sprinting six in the morning.

The Earth Day Run events have made it possible for the NGC group to plant 36,000 fruit- bearing trees in a watershed in Isabela found in Sierra Madre region. Two years ago, proceeds helped fishermen affected by Typhoon Yolanda in their training to make fiberglass boats.

Last year, the run produced portable solar- powered lighting kits to the Tawbuid Mangyan. This year’s beneficiaries should have a great time reaping their blessings in the coming months.

With being fit and global warming both becoming important matters to celebrities nowadays, it is no surprise that the

Earth Day Run has been at-

tracting famous faces, almost everyone silently making use of the event as a way to express their support to environmental concerns.

Turcuato implied, “This year is no different when it comes to celebrity participation. I’m not really into naming particular personalities who will be around but those who will join are likely to find familiar people in showbiz or other fields. Certainly, it is not a bad thing to run side by side with a famous person or probably someone you idolize.”
