2 street sweepers hurt in QC mishap

- – Romina Cabrera, Mike Frialde

Two street sweepers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority ( MMDA) were injured when they were hit by a car driven by a police officer along EDSA in Quezon City yesterday.

Cristina Carreon and Renato Bakian were watering plants in the northbound lane of the P. Tuazon tunnel at around 8: 30 a.m. when the incident occurred.

The driver of the white Nissan Urvan (AQA-7963), Police Officer 3 Faustino Tabilin, was reportedly overtaking another vehicle when he hit the two street sweepers, police said.

Tabilin surrendered to the Quezon City police.

In another report, the MMDA said, the two were pushing their cart, loaded with cleaning equipment along the P. Tuazon tunnel’s southbound lane when a Subaru sport utility vehicle (ZFA-552) hit them.

Francis Martinez, head of the MMDA’s Metro Parkway Cleaning Group, said the impact threw Bakian onto the northbound lane, where he was hit by a Toyota Vios (conduction sticker YQ-3252).

The MMDA said Bakian and Carreon were initially rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center. Carreon sustained minor injuries while Bakian suffered a head injury and broken bones. They were later transferred to the Philippine Orthopedic Center.

The MMDA said the incident is still under investigation.
