Havaianas turns Japanese at MYOH 2016
To pay tribute to its Asian heritage, Havaianas recently threw a Japanese-themed Make Your Own Havaianas at SM Mega Mall Fashion Trade Hall. On its 11th year, the event was all about the ancient art of shibori, a Japanese fabric-dyeing technique that makes use of indigo shades to create beautiful patterns of cloths for kimonos and obi sashes, paying tribute to the flip-flop brand’s Asian heritage — a nod to Havaianas’ original inspiration, the Japanese zori, the traditional sandals made of fabric straps and rice straw holes.
Everyone felt the Japanese vibe as they got to customize their own kawaii- inspired flip-flops made from a wide variety of colored soles and straps and one-of-a-kind iconic Japanese pins like Sumo, Ninja, Ramen, and Sakura. Aside from new personalized Havaianas pairs, guests were also given souvenir photos straight from the event’s Instagram posts, and enjoyed Shibori-stamping and bracelet-making areas.
Joining this year’s MYOH as celebrity assemblers were Bailey May, Ylona Garcia and Julia Baretto. Athletes Kiefer Ravena, Mika Reyes and Jeron Teng joined lucky Havaianaticos in personalizing their flip-flops.
“Now is the perfect time to celebrate Japan as it resonates well with Filipinos who look to this inspiring country for their fashion, food, and travel influences,” says Anne Gonzalez, managing director of Terry S.A. Inc.
