Agascon reigns in Milo Checkmate summer tilt
Arlan Sylvester Agascon of Renato Lopez Elem. School of Mandaluyong racked up five victories to sweep the premier intermediate division crown for the second batch of the Milo Checkmate summer classes at Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong City last weekend.
The 11-year-old Agascon flashed top form in all five matches to dominate the one-day event aimed at monitoring the performance of the students after having given them a series of two-week chess lessons.
Andrei Bagaindoc of Lyceum-Alabang placed second with four points while Paul Adonis Cabatbat of Southville International School and Johnriel Angelo Ordonio of Manila Science School shared third place with 3.5 points.
The top finishers in Group B of Intermediate Section were Joshua Emperado (first); Kylhe Medina (second); Abegail Ordonio (third) and Gael Almeda (fourth) while Ross Sanchez, Ralph Alejandro and Marcus Imperial topped Beginners 2 followed by Jemnoffer Iral, Cielo Balilla and Jayden Go; Jalen Iral, Ned Mayuga and Joaquin Manalang; and John Galliguez, Alexandra Lumbis and Daniel Hinkle.
Gabriel Solomon, Carl Mendoza and Arwin Hernandez shared top honors in Beginners 1 while Sebastian Dorado, Avi Fuellas and Ryan Neria wound up joint fourth followed by Macus Lumbis and Juan Ritaga; and Philip Berroya and Naomi Pascual.
Other players cited for their performances were Agascon (most organized); Alejandro (best newcomer); Balilla (top lady); Emperado (most improved); and Indira Dam for sportsmanship. Winners in the Open section participated in by selected students were Burlington Tiu (first); Eugene Quiambao (second); Cedric Abris (third) and Armand Narvaja (fourth).
