The world’s most popular sports car marks another milestone in its storied 27-year history. Fresh from being awarded the 2016 World Car of the Year and the World Car Design of the Year accolades, as well as being declared the Japan Car of the Year for 2015-2016, the UK Car of the Year and even Top Gear

Philippines’ Car of the Year for 2015, the Mazda MX-5, more popularly known as the Miata, celebrates yet another achievement. Mazda Motor Corporation has recently announced that the production run of the Mazda MX-5 nameplate has already reached one million units.

Marking this momentous occasion is a global tour of the one-millionth-production unit MX-5, a signature Soul Red ND. Spanning four generations from the NA, NB, NC and now the ND, the two-seat MX-5 roadster has long since held the honor of being one of the most ubiquitous sports cars in the world.

Following the affordable twoseat sports car concept, it singlehandedly rekindled the interest in this genre back in the early 1990s. Since then, the MX-5 has become a global model that has the benchmark for its Mazda’s “jinba ittai” or “horse and rider as one” philosophy.

“It is truly an honor to be a witness, along with hundreds of thousands of MX-5 owners around the world, one of the most iconic cars in history reach this one million unit production milestone,” says Steven Tan, president and CEO of Berjaya Auto Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles in the country. He adds, “Considering the first MX-5 rolled out of the Ujina Plant Number One in Hiroshima, Japan only in 1989, it didn’t take long for drivers around the world to realize how much youthfulness and vibrancy the MX-5 can bring to their everyday driving.”

In the local scene, the Miata Club of the Philippines has been championing the MX-5 since the late ‘90s when it was first sold in the country. It counts a sizeable membership that owns all four generations of the two-seat roadster. Since the ND’s launch last August of 2015, Mazda Philippines dealers have already sold a total of XXX fourth generation MX-5 ND units across the country.

The 2016 MX- 5 comes in two variants – one with a six- speed manual gearbox and another a six- speed automatic. Both sport the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine and Mazda’s latest rendition of the KODO: Soul of Motion design theme and are engineered precisely to provide maximum driving fun on the road.
