Pinay actress honored at New York fest

Therese ‘Teri’ Malvar (photo) will be honored with the Screen Internatio­nal Rising Star Asia Award at the 14th New York Asian Film Festival that will run from June 22 to 29 in New York City.

Screen Daily reports that “Malvar is being recognized for her performanc­es in ‘daring roles that have expanded the range of contempora­ry Philippine­s’ cinema.’ The 15year-old actress will be presented with her award before a screening of Ralston Jover’s Hamog (Haze), in which she plays a violent street kid who infiltrate­s a twisted household as its maid.”

Japan’s Go Ayano and China’s Jenny Lin will also receive the same award.

Teri has already won two Best Actress awards for her debut film Ang

Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo (2013, 1st CineFilipi­no Film Festival) and Hamog by Ralston Jover (2015, 10th Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival), and three nomination­s, all for Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita (2014 Gawad Urian Best Actress, 2014 Golden Screen Awards Breakthrou­gh Performanc­e by an Actress and 2014 Star Awards for Movies New Movie Actress of the Year). Teri’s latest film is Sakaling

Hindi Makarating by Ice Idanan, Second Best Picture and Best Director (Idanan) in the 2016 CineFilipi­no Film Festival. This year marks the third Screen Internatio­nal Rising Star Asia award at the NYAFF which aims to bring Asia’s most exciting new talents to internatio­nal attention.

Aside from Haze, two other Pinoy films made it to the final list of 15 Asian movies that shape the themes of the filmfest’s 15th anniversar­y edition, namely Apocalypse Child by Mario Cornejo and Honor Thy Father by Erik Matti.

The films will be screened at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater and SVA Theater.
