British Council offers PhD scholarship, research grants
The British Council in the Philippines announced recently that the applications for the Newton PhD Program and Institutional Links for development and research are now open.
Working through the Newton Agham Program, the British Council and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) are pleased to offer the Newton PhD Program, a jointly funded program that offers full-time PhD scholarships for Filipino researchers at a UK higher education institution from January 2017 until April 2020.
Deadline of application is on June 27.
The aim of the Newton PhD Program is to facilitate the capacity building of individuals, and the building of sustainable, long- lasting links between the UK and the Philippines. It is also aimed at providing opportunities for international training and development at the doctoral level, as well as supporting the production of highly trained researchers in the Philippines with international experience.
The program is open to Filipino citizens who must be in the first five years of their research career, have obtained a master’s degree in a related field and must be a faculty or staff member of a Philippine higher education institute (HEI).
Also part of the Newton Agham Program is the Newton Institutional Links, which provides grants for the development of research and innovation collaborations between the UK and the Philippines. The research facilitated by these grants tackles local development needs and challenges such as extreme weather conditions, access to affordable health care, food and energy security. The grants are intended to provide smallscale seed funding to:
• start and develop collaborations between academic groups, departments and institutions in partner countries and the UK
• support the exchange of expertise and research knowledge
• establish local hubs for UK-partner country activities
