Meet The 1975

-

I do not know if they realize it but music lovers who have chosen to make the move to streaming are depriving themselves of one incredible pleasure. This is taking a copy of an album, CD or vinyl, removing the plastic cover, putting the disc in the machine and then waiting for the sound to come out of the speakers.

The result is not always to one’s liking. I have heard some duds I regretted opening. But those instances are far outweighed by the joy of coming across a new artist and getting blown away with the surprise of great music. I wonder how many users stream songs by new never-heard before artists and if they also get that joyous jolt of discovery.

I felt that when I first encountered The 1975 two years ago. The band was new and British. And you know how interesting bands from the UK could be. My hunch was right and I was not disappointed. The 1975, with its strange name, which I later found out came from a book of poetry wherein beat poet Jack Kerouac had scribbled “1 June The 1975” on the backpage, make pop-rock music that is so effortlessly commercial. It is young and jaunty but can also be haunting and sexy at times. I heard hints of Owl City and Arctic Monkeys with lots of ’80s pop influences. The mixture is very strange but it works very well.

The album is simply titled The 1975 and what I had was the Double Disc Deluxe Edition. This was released after The 1975 debut album zoomed to the top of the British charts in 2013. The Deluxe Edition is made up of that album, plus four EPs that The 1975 released earlier.

Calling bands out there trying to make it big. Check out what The 1975 did. To start with these boys produced an EP of four originals that they peddled themselves. When this did OK, they made another, and another and another until they got their label deal. After The 1975 album became a hit, they came up with the Deluxe edition including those four EPs in the second disc. Fans can now have all of their

hits in one nice package.

Of course, that cIever strategy worked very well because The 1975 already had the music in them. It was just waiting to be released. And proof that there was more where it came from can be found in the group’s second album. Brace yourselves for the title of this No. 1 seller. I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It.

I do not know what these boys are up to making a title like that one. But who cares about reasons when what you are listening to is even better than their first. They have now learned the subtleties of being bare and mellow and the intricacies of seducing the listener with the song sequence. But without missing on the commercial hooks. As it is, ILIWYSFYASBYSUOI carves in cement the fact that The 1975 is not only exciting, the band is also extremely talented.

The 1975 is made up of Matthew Healy, vocalist and producer; George Daniel, drummer and producer; Adam Hann, guitarist; and Ross MacDonald, bassist. They were all classmates in high school in Cheshire, England, who got together to form a band when they were only 15 years old. To check out their early hits, go to The

1975, which by the way, is also available on vinyl. This one has the big hits The City,

Sex and Chocolate, plus other tunes like M.O.N.E.Y., Pressure, She Way Out, Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You and the absolutely infectious Settle Down. And then there are those four EPs titled Facedown; Sex, Music

For Cars and IV EP in the second disc.

I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It includes: The 1975, Love Me, UGH!, A Change Of Heart, She’s American, If I Believe In You, Please Be Naked, Lostmyhead, The Ballad Of Me And My Brain, Somebody Else, Loving Someone, I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, The Sound, This Must Be My Dream, Paris, Nana; and She Lays Down.
