Gov’t workers urged: Serve public well or resign

- By CHRISTINA MENDEZ

President Duterte directed the 1.53 million workers in government to imbibe the essence of public service by efficiently assisting the public or just resign.

Duterte said those who cannot comply with his order should just resign or work in the private sector.

“Now if you cannot comply with it, then sorry. We part ways. That’s the only way to do it,” the President said during the testimonial dinner given to him by the San Beda Law alumni at Club Filipino in San Juan on Thursday night.

“That’s mandatory, including the ( workers in the) Office of the President down to the barangay level. I will bind the local governments to strictly end it here,” he added.

Duterte said he plans to issue a circular that will reduce to 30 days the process of signing papers in all departments of government.

“Three to five signatures, one month, it will come out. ‘ Wag kayong mag- follow up. That is mandatory at magagalit talaga ako ( do not follow up. That is mandatory and I will really get mad),” he said.

The President flared up after reading a letter to the editor in a newspaper which complained about poor government services.

Duterte said he wants a system wherein getting electrical, engineering and business permits should be finished in three days. This is the system he imposed in Davao City when he was mayor.

He reiterated that he does not want any person to be burdened by red tape when doing business with the government.

He cited his directive to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III on providing a one- stop shop for applicants at the Department of Labor and Employment in Manila.

“Malalakad siguro one hundred meters. Ayokong magbalik- balik ang tao. Ayaw ko pahirapan ang Pilipino, period. Ayaw ko ( if they have to walk, only one hundred meters. I don’t want people returning several times. I don’t want Filipinos to suffer, period. I don’t like it),” he said.

He also reiterated his fight against corruption.

“Why is this government oppressing its own people? Answer me. I ask, why? It has to stop. Everybody from the Office of the President down,” Duterte said.
