The new administration has outlined a three-pronged agenda aimed at improving operations in the country’s main gateway, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Newly- installed Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Eddie Monreal said projects in revitalizing NAIA would revolve around service, safety and security, and decongestion of the four terminals.

For service, MIAA is planning to open up the NAIA terminals to regular taxis starting on Monday to allow arriv- ing passengers an alternative mode of transportation and avoid long lines at the arrival curbside taxi bays.

“The NAIA does not have enough accredited taxis and vehicles-for-hire to take thousands of domestic and international passengers arriving daily,” he said.

Monreal added details are still to be ironed out to ensure passenger safety, adding regular taxi drivers should adhere to the rules MIAA will impose.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has also inked an agreement with airline car- riers to ensure NAIA comfort rooms are kept clean and well maintained.

In terms of safety and security, the airport authority targets to employ additional personnel in all security screening checkpoints at the NAIA terminals.

“The installation of a closed circuit TV television system, involving high-resolution cameras, covering all areas at the NAIA will also be prioritized to ensure that there are no security blind spots,” he said.

The reactivation of the airport security center, a central desk connecting all agencies designed to provide immediate response to passenger complaints and concerns, is also in the works.

For decongestion, MIAA said they are working on a system that would significantly minimize flight delays, in partnership with airline companies, the Civil Aviation Board and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

He encouraged public feedback to identify areas where the NAIA needs improvement and urged the media to help out in eliminating illegal activities and other malpractices at the airport.
