Magnitude 5.2 quake rocks Ormoc
ORMOC CITY – A magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit this city on Wednesday night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The quake, which occurred at around 7:56 p.m., triggered panic among residents, who rushed into the streets. It was followed by at least six aftershocks and another earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1.
Phivolcs said the quake was located at eight kilometers east of Ormoc City.
Ormoc City Vice Mayor Leo Carmelo Locsin Jr. said rescue units were deployed to check on people needing assistance.
Mayor Richard Gomez appointed Locsin as acting mayor before he left for an official trip on Wednesday.
