Urologist receives Bayani ng Kalusugan award

Dr. Egidio P. Elio, urologist at St. Luke’s Medical Center and member of the Sanggunian­g Panlalawig­an of Antique, was recipient of the Bayani ng Kalusugan award.

Former President Benigno C. Aquino III gave the award at a ceremony held at Manila Hotel on the 118th anniversar­y of the Department of Health last month.

Bayani ng Kalusugan Award honors individual­s and organizati­ons that gave unselfish service that helped institutio­nalized universal health care.

Under the Philippine Urologic Manpower Program from 1995 to 2000, Elio worked for equitable distributi­on of urologists in the country and initiated training programs for urologists at the Davao Medical Center and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

As executive director of Tabang Antique since 2002, he organized 23 special surgical missions that performed thousands of surgeries for free.

Dr. Elio also conducted for the past five years 400 medical missions in the barangays of Antique, remote and far-flung areas not reached by local physicians.

A member of the Antique provincial board since 2006, Elio has authored 19 provincial ordinances in line with the promotion of health care.

A recipient of The Outstandin­g Filipino Physician, and the Outstandin­g Thomasian (UST) Alumni awards, Dr. Elio graduated with high distinctio­n from the University of Sto. Tomas.
