A murder suspect was shot dead in Makati Wednesday, but not before he killed a policeman sent to serve him an arrest warrant.

Angelo Tampos died at his house on Constancia street from several gunshot wounds in the body.

Tampos shot dead Senior Police Officer 4 Edmar Bumagat, assigned to the Regional Police Intelligence and Operating Unit ( RPOIU) of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).

Tampos reportedly worked as a hitman and courier for alleged drug pusher Norman Manete, who is the subject of a police manhunt, NCRPO director Chief Superintendent Oscar Albayalde said.

Manete was one of those who surrendered when the Makati police implemented Oplan Tokhang, he added.

An NCRPO team, headed by Chief Inspector Jojit Jumawan, rushed to Tampos’ house on Constancia street after receiving a tip from an informant.

They were out to serve the arrest warrant for murder issued on March 10, 2015 by Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 136 Judge Rico Liwanag.

However, when the lawmen went past the gates of his home, Tampos snuck up on Bumagat, grabbed his firearm and shot him, Albayalde said.

Police Officer 3 Aries Benico shot Tampos in turn.

PNP mourns death

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa and Albayalde extended their sympathy and assistance to Bumagat’s family at the Rizal Funeral Homes in Pasay City, where he lies in state.

“There is no substitute for life. No amount of assistance will compensate for the death of our policemen. But this is our duty and we will not stop. We will mourn but we will continue our anti- drug campaign,” Dela Rosa said in his brief chat with Bumagat’s widow, Genair, and only daughter Gen Sallie Mar.

Albayalde said in the police’s campaign against illegal drugs, “we are also victims. These criminals are not afraid to kill to get even with the authorities. However, we are dedicated to do our duty and we will continuously intensify our campaign against crimes and illegal drugs so that others will live safely.”

Bumagat’s colleagues said he was a dedicated policeman. Though newly assigned to the RPIOU – he started July 13 – he proved his commitment to the war on illegal drugs as outpost commander in Barangay San Perfecto, San Juan City.

They said Edmar, as friends call Bumagat, was a doting father and had a great sense of humor.
