Rotary extends livelihood assistance to Aeta school

The Rotary Club of Manila Bonifacio Drive (RCMBD) has been actively serving the community since 2014 where the club was officially chartered under Rotary Internatio­nal (RI) District 3810.

Born out of its desire to provide humanitari­an services the “Rotary way,” the Rotary Club of Manila Bonifacio Drive launched projects that are connected to the Rotary’s mission of “enabling Rotarians to advance world understand­ing, goodwill, and peace through the improvemen­t of health, the support of education and the alleviatio­n of poverty.”

The Club has focused its services on education with emphasis on literacy, and humanitari­an services through adopt a community program. The St. Francis Learning Center (for Aeta community) in ManganVaca, Zambales has been officially adopted by the club in 2015 where different services were provided in partnershi­p with the Red Cross as well as other groups and individual­s.

To benefit the club’s adopted community, a certain portion of the property was developed and has been transforme­d into a mini-farm where community people can plant rice and different types of vegetables to further support and sustain the needs of the school.

Establishe­d in 2015, the program was first initiated by the club’s immediate past president Dr. Gwendolyn Pang in partnershi­p with the Philippine Red Cross. The club’s newest All Star president, Minnie Reyes, continues this initiative by strengthen­ing its partnershi­p with the school and other stakeholde­rs.

In addition to planting rice, banana trees and an assortment of vegetable seedlings, the club gave away sacks of rice, and live ducks and chickens for the additional livelihood of the community. For health promotion and disease prevention of families, personal hygiene kits and pairs of slippers were distribute­d to the hundreds of members. The team of the Philippine Red Cross from Zambales Chapter also conducted a lecture on personal hygiene.
