#LiveBrighter:

Basking in the sun, embracing the brighter life

- By Argie C. Aguja

T o better introduce a career choice where millennials can grow within a company and start a profession that fuels their passion, Sun Life of Canada ( Philippines), Inc. has presented possible career opportunities through the launch of the #LiveBrighter recruitment campaign last Aug. 17, at Aracama Filipino Cuisine at The Fort Strip, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

The campaign, launched in the presence of the media, bloggers and young professionals, discusses how a career in Sun Life as a Financial Advisor could be a viable choice for millenials who wish to have the time and resources to pursue their passions while advocating financial foresight and planning.

#LiveBrighter under the sun

Sun Life recruitment manager Fin Bernardo explains how the current millennial generation fits the requisites of a Sun Life financial advisor. “Millenials are known to be slashers as they juggle a lot of things like travelling, blogging, and other passion projects on top of their regular 8- 5 jobs. It sounds very aspirational but how can they sustain this in terms of time and resources?” says Bernardo. “With that in mind, we see that the profession of a Financial Advisor is a perfect fit for their lifestyle,” adds Bernardo.

In popular culture, the role of a financial advisor was introduced through Cinema One’s Single/ Single, a romantic-comedy mini series starring Matteo Guidicelli and Shaina Magdayao co-produced with CinemaOne. It looks into the lives of urban millennials and young professionals living on their own, subtly integrating wealth management advocacy concepts into the story to educate viewers on how to become more financially independent. After the show wrapped up its second season, Sun Life fueled the campaign by organizing # LiveBrighter Sessions — a series of meet- ups and gatherings that shows how a Financial Advisor lives up to the demands and rewards of the profession.

A career to fuel your passion

Guided by the core values of a Sun Life Financial Advisor — caring, professional, inspiring and winning —these #LiveBrighter Sessions offers a glimpse in the life of a Sun Life financial advisor and how this could be the career break that a person is looking for. Aiming to reach a greater number of people and penetrate the millennial audience, three successful women achievers shared their insights during one such encounter.

Design thinking advocate, social media expert and creative blogger Arriane Serafico discussed how she was able to follow her dreams because of a career that fueled her passions. “Following your passion is a good thing, mine is Teaching, Technology and Women Empowerment. But that is not enough. If you want to make a living out of your passion, you must have a solid plan, a way of financially sustaining your goals in the long run. At the end of the day, you also have to think about your long game. Pursuing your passion and being practical are not opposing concepts. Your passion should be fueling you, not draining you. Because the reason we pursue our passion is so that we can build the lives what we want,“explains Serafico.

Former ramp model and now Sun Life financial advisor and unit manager Agnes Dizon-Cuaso explains how she found her life’s passion by helping people have a brighter life. “I was a model and an events host before I joined Sun Life. I had a quarter life crisis and wondered what should I be doing. Sun Life came at a perfect time. At first, I tried being a part-time financial advisor. But eventually I realized that the more time I spent with Sun Life, the more effective I work with clients. The more I did that, the more it became rewarding. All the rewards, the awards, the compensation, it’s all icing on the cake. When I made it to the Million Dollar Round Table ( MDRT), travel opportunities came and I was able to visit the Sun Life headquarters in Canada,” recalls Cuaso.

Ballerina, Sun Life financial advisor and now manager candidate Cheska Sarausad also shares a similar story. “I came to Sun Life when I quit my day job after Typhoon Ondoy. At 22, our house was damaged and I needed to attend to house construction from 10am-5pm yet still attend ballet rehearsals at 5:30pm to 9pm. I wanted a job that can flex that way. I invested most of the income I saved from my previous day job. So when my friends wanted to know how to invest, they would ask me. And that’s where this passion started. Income-wise, at 22, I was earning P13,000 a month. Six years later, the income is already ten times that. Passion does not mean low-paying,” beams Sarausad.

Being a Financial Advisor is a career path that offers a unique taste of the benefits and satisfaction that comes with the fulfillment of helping other people reach their financial and personal goals. More than the chance to earn unlimited income, it also provides perks such as all- expense travel and the freedom to work with a flexible schedule.
