Wellness and the city

- By LAI S. REYES

There’s a 15- hectare mas terplanned urban center in Mandaluyong City where the concept of health and wellness is thoughtfully integrated right within its residential, commercial and business hubs.

At Greenfield District, practically all the establishments are interconnected so one need not go through the stresses of a daily commute, while working out in the process.

Residents and tenants of Twin Oaks Place and Soho Central Private Residences, for example, can enjoy leisurely walks to and from work or have lunch or dinner at any of the restaurants located in The Portal and The Hub via tree-lined roads, four-meter-wide pedestrian walkways, and a network of interconnected walkways. The MRT Shaw Blvd. station is also just a short walk away.

“The Greenfield District is designed to be a walkable district,” notes Jeffrey Campos, president and chairman of the board, Greenfield Development Corporation. “We waste so much time being stuck in traffic every day. It’s not just bad for the economy, but for our health as well.”

Characterized by wide, open spaces, generous landscaping, and numerous venues for community events, Greenfield District also offers a refreshing environment where the physically active can enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Its pedestrian-friendly layout is perfect for early morning activities like jogging, outdoor yoga, and tai chi.

“The Greenfield property is not really 15 hectares, but 23. We built our first office in Mayflower in the late ‘50s. Later, my father JY Campos of Unilab started to acquire the properties you see right now,” Jeffrey adds. “When construction for the Greenfield District began in 2011, it called for giving up onehectare of the property just for open space — so city dwellers could have pocket parks and other green areas where they could have a mini picnic or take their pets for a walk.”

STAY HEALTHY, LIVE WELL

Greenfield District is where Edsa Central once stood. Its name is derived from the open park, which is lined with retail shops and interesting restaurants you wouldn’t find in malls like the Kanin Club, Blackwood Bistro, Brazil, Brazil, and Habib Persian Cuisine.

“We repositioned the property (Edsa Central). The redevelopment started in 2011 and we did it phase by phase, starting with The Hub — the resto strip,” relates Anne Molina, leasing manager.

Since Mandaluyong City is dotted with malls, Anne had to think of ways to get a fair share of the market.

“At Greenfield District, we try to provide things/services that some malls couldn’t offer like street parking and flexible mall operating hours,” adds Anne.

Greenfield District also boasts two recreational facilities that have since become major attractions in the area: the Trampoline Park and Climb Central.

Trampoline Park is a giant warehouse filled with dozens of trampoline mats stretching from wall-to-wall, allowing you to jump, fly, and literally bounce in every direction. It’s a place where one can sweat it out, de-stress, and play!

Beside it is Climb Central Manila, a state-of-the-art activity center from Singapore that brings the climbing experience closer to climbling enthusiasts of all ages.

Located at The Portal along Mayflower St., the 413-sq.m. facility offers clean, comfortable climbable walls ranging from nine to 12 meters high.

The fully-airconditioned Climb Central is perfect for teambuilding and family bonding as kids as young as five years old can easily fit into the harness.

The concept of wellness has also been thoughtfully integrated right within the residential developments in Greenfield District. The best health (HealthFirst and Bio Balance), fitness (Gold’s Gym Athletics) and beauty establishments have since been put up in an innovative, interconnected one-stop zone at the lower ground floors of Twin Oaks Place and Soho Central Private Residences.

“I’m pretty strict and picky when it comes to choosing tenants for our residential developments. In fact, it took us around five years to lease the spaces out because I want to offer only the best for our clients,” explains Campos. “For example, we’re not the first development to have Gold’s Gym, but the one we have at Twin Oaks Place is Gold’s Gym Athletics.”

A fitness buff himself, Campos checked out various fitness facilities in the country but none met his standards other than Gold’s Gym.

The first-of-its-kind in the country, Gold’s Gym Athletics is focused on sports and group fitness activities. It houses a basketball court and footsal area, and offers fitness regimens such as TRX, Zumba, body jam, and many others.

“At Greenfield District, safety is our primary concern. We see to it that all these recreational facilities are clean at all times and safe,” assures Campos.

At Greenfield District, wellness in the city takes a modern and convenient spin indeed.
