Ormoc S&T fair features new technologies
Local entrepreneurs are seeing huge potential in the technologies and innovations developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Edgar Garcia, DOST Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), said that at least 19 applications for direct licensing agreements had been drawn during the Tech Transfer Day Visayas region leg held in Ormoc City in mid-September.
Garcia said that the successful TTD event was testimony not just to the quality of the DOST technologies and innovations being offered for adoption, but also to the openness of Filipino entrepreneurs to new products as well as the opportunities the technologies could bring.
“There were almost 60 inquiries for possible business collaborators,” Garcia said.
Garcia said the successful TTD also made them look forward to the Mindanao leg in Davao City this November.
The outcome of the TTD in Ormoc had also encouraged DOST regional directors to hold smaller-scale TTDs.
“Next year, we will conduct a more expanded approach like per region or clustering approach,” Garcia said.
The Visayas leg of the TTD campaign was spearheaded by the DOST Region 8, led by director engineer Edgar Esperancilla who partnered with the Ormoc City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OrCham), enabling the DOST to hold the TTD as one of the pre-event activities during the 25th Visayas Area Business Conference.
The DOST showcased 74 technologies ready and open for adoption by Filipino entrepreneurs.
“We are selling technologies, not products,” DOST Undersecretary for Research & Development Rowena Cristina Guevara said.
Around 300 out of the 500 business conference delegates attended the Technology Transfer Day.
Among the technologies showcased in the TTD were carrageenan plant growth promoter, semen extender for goat, nipa sap sugar production, stabilized brown rice, complementary foods, DOST tablea, Food Innovation Center processing equipment, ecofriendly septic system, and abaca fiber for packaging and currency base papers.
