The Philippines ranked sixth in Asia Pacific in terms of average mobile internet speed, according to leading content delivery network services provider Akamai.

Akamai’s State of the Internet Q2 2016 report released recently showed the Philippines placed sixth out of 15 Asia Pacific countries as it had an average mobile internet speed of 8.5 Megabits per second (Mbps) in the second quarter.

South Korea topped the list of Asia Pacific countries as it had an average mobile internet speed of 11.1 Mbps, followed by New Zealand with 9.8 Mbps, and Japan with 9.5 Mbps.

Taiwan and Australia got the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

While the Philippines ranked lower than the five countries, it was ahead of Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India and Vietnam.

The report also showed the Philippines achieved the third highest peak mobile internet speed in the second quarter in the Asia Pacific.

In particular, it had a peak mobile internet speed of 105.1 Mbps, next to Australia which had a peak speed of 171.2 Mbps and Thailand which had 127.7 Mbps.

While the Philippines was included in the rankings of Asia Pacific countries in terms of mobile internet speed, Akamai said it did not meet the minimum requirement of having 25,000 unique IPv4 addresses classified as mobile.

Ramon Isberto, public affairs head for PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Inc., said the results of the report indicate mobile internet service levels are improving in the Philippines.

“Specifically, it apparently reflects the growing deployment and use of LTE (Long Term Evolution),” he said.

In terms of the average connection speed for fixed broadband for the second quarter, Akamai’s report showed the Philippines ranked 14th out of the 15 Asia Pacific countries as it had an average connection speed of 4.3 Mbps, performing better than bottom-dweller India which had 3.6 Mbps.

South Korea topped the list for fixed broadband with an average connection speed of 27 Mbps, followed by Hong Kong with 19.5 Mbps, and Singapore with 17.2 Mbps.

While the Philippines placed 14th, it posted 37 percent year-on-year growth in average connection speed for fixed broadband for the second quarter.
