- By LOUELLA DESIDERIO

Digital payments company PayPal has partnered with Bayad Center to allow overseas Filipinos to pay utility bills online.

In a statement yesterday, PayPal said the partnership was forged to enable overseas Filipino customers to access Bayad Center’s online platform to pay their electricity, water and phone bills through PayPal.

About 10.23 million Filipinos or approximately 10 percent of the population currently work overseas and most of them send remittances to their families in the Philippines to help pay the bills.

Such set-up is typically a two-step process with the first step involving the beneficiary picking up the money sent and the second involving the use of the cash to pay the biller in another location.

With the partnership, overseas Filipinos could now pay the bills of their family members back home in a much faster, convenient and secure manner.

“I am really pleased to announce the partnership with Bayad Center. Bayad Center has always been a convenient tool for local Filipinos to pay their bills. With this partnership, PayPal is able to expand the reach of Bayad Center to a global user base and enable overseas Filipinos to pay their bills in a faster, simpler, and more secure way,” Rahul Shinghal, general manager for PayPal Southeast Asia said.

The partnership expands PayPal’s cross-border bill pay offering to the Philippines, which is also available through Xoom, a PayPal service.

Through Xoom, customers in the US at present, can pay their PLDT or Smart postpaid mobile bills for their loved ones.

To pay bills through the Bayad Center, new customers will need to create a PayPal account and enroll a bank account, debit card or credit card as their payment source.

Founded in 1998, PayPal provides individuals better ways to manage and move their money through an open and secure payments platform.

Bayad Center is the pioneer and leader in the outsourced payment collection industry in the Philippines, offering a reliable and convenient bills payment service.
