Unioil keen on Euro 5

- By DANESSA RIVERA

Barely a year after government required oil companies to produce and sell Euro 4-compliant fuels, Unioil Petroleum Philippines Inc. is already working to market Euro 5 fuels in the country, its top official said.

During the company’s 50th anniversary last week, Unioil president Kenneth Pundanera bared plans of launching Euro 5 fuels very soon.

There’s no final date for the launch yet but it will happen “within the next few months,” the company president said.

Unioil will be pioneering again Euro 5 fuels in the country once it pushes the launch of its new products, which will have a maximum sulfur content of 10 parts per million.

“Unioil’s Euro 5 fuel will once again be the cleanest and most advanced in the country,” the company said.

Unioil was the first to introduce Euro 2- compliant diesel in the country with its pure diesel, which has lowered sulfur levels from 2000 parts per million to 500 parts per million.

In 2013, it led the introduction of Euro 4 fuels which further lowered the maximum sulfur content to 50 parts per million.

All oil players are required by government to have Euro 4- compliant fuel products by January 1, 2016, in compliance with the Philippine Clean Air Act and Department of Energy Circular DC2015-060004 mandating the use of environmentally clean fuels that meet specified emission standards.

Euro 4 is a globally– accepted European emission standard for vehicles which require significantly low amount of sulfur and benzene.

Apart from the launch of new fuels, Unioil is also introducing its ground breaking air vision project, Pundanera said.

The oil firm partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its Air Visual Node Project nationwide, which aims to install the air visual node, an air quality monitor in locations in the Philippines. Including Unioil’s retail service stations.
