Bigger, tougher URCC 28 on tap

- By Abac Cordero

The Universal Reality Combat Championship unveils its second major offering of the year when the URCC 28: Vindication is staged on Nov. 6 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom.

A total of 10 mixed martial arts contests will be on tap to provide the excitement for MMA fans following a blockbuster event a couple of months ago – the URCC 27: Rebellion.

The previous card was such a success that it ranked No. 1 in the Nielsen Ratings, preceding a couple more URCC presentations like Fight Night, Digmaan and Dutdutan.

The URCC has been promoting MMA in the country for the past 14 years and has presented a total of 80 events, mostly before a sell-out crowd.

“The URCC is the most exciting league in Southeast Asia,” said Alvin Aguilar, the man behind URCC and considered as the father of Philippine MMA, yesterday.

The fighters were presented to the media at the Passion Restaurant of Resorts World.

To draw the attention of the MMA crowd will be the special exhibition bout between Team Chan and Team Estroso. It’s a three-onthree bout, six fighters will be inside the ring at the same time.

Aguilar said it will not be the type of a “brawl” people expect because rules are still in place, and to be carried out by two referees inside the ring.

“But you can definitely expect a lot of fireworks in there,” he said.

“Madugo ito ( This will be bloody). Kaya sa mga kalaban namin galingan nila ( To our opponents, give it your best),” said Sugar Ray Estroso.

The main bouts will feature a featherweight championship clash between Ryan dela Cruz and Do Gyeom Lee, a flyweight title fight between CJ “Golden Boy” De Tomas and Alvin “Kastigo” Ramirez, and a women’s flyweight championship contest between Geli Bulaong and Yan Qi Hui.

The other bouts will pit featherweight Red Romero against Miguel Mosquera, strawweight Solomon Dultra against MJ Abrillo, bantamweight Drex Zamboanga against Sem Bicaldo and bantamweight Arjay Bongala against Rodian Menchavez.

For the first time, fighters seeing action in a URCC card will be covered by insurance, according to Aguilar, who vowed to continue looking after the welfare of MMA fighters in the country.
