In case you haven’t noticed, what used to be “taboo” is now the new norm. You know: same-sex marriage, and boy-meets-boy and girl-meets-girl and “they all live happily ever after” have become common fare not just in books but also on both the small and big screens. All men are created equal regardless of gender, right?

Indeed, the times, they are a-changing. The line between “the male” and “the female” has disappeared. Still and all, a few questions arise, such as the interrogative title of Viva Films’ newest offering, Bakit Lahat ng Gwapo

May Boyfriend? (opening nationwide on Wednesday, Oct. 19), directed from his own script by Jun Lana (who is happily married to his long-time partner Perci Intalan, their union solemnized in New York City’s Central Park) and starring Dennis Trillo, Anne Curtis and Paolo Ballesteros.

Anne plays Kylie, a girl seemingly cursed for having failed romances with gay boyfriends; Paolo as Benj, Kylie’s “paminta” (as in pa-men, meaning pretending to be a real man) best friend; and Dennis as Diego whom Anne and Paolo are trying hard to reveal if he’s a “paminta” or a genuine macho. In real life, Anne admitted having “paminta” friends (but not boyfriends?) who have gotten married and have children. Of course, Dennis is believed to be a verdadero (real man), quoted as saying that he’s ready to wait for six years which is the deadline given by his girlfriend (again!) Jennylyn Mercado for her altar date (with Dennis?... wait after six years and what happens between now and then). Paolo has no qualms about his identity (does his having a love child with an exgirlfriend disprove anything?).
