Ready to face the world

- By PINKY S. ICAMEN

When a woman driven by passion speaks, one feels the power of her words. Her determination to always be at the top of her game makes her powerful. It is her honest voice and brilliant thoughts that motivate her to always aim for success. In the depths of this woman’s soul is the desire to be the best version of herself.

Justine Stephanie Belano is ready to scale new heights in her career as a fashion designer. Known for her bridal and bespoke creations, this 25-year- old has unfolded a new chapter in her life by moving to Paris for a masters degree in fashion. She is set to and take on a bigger world with the hopes that this big move will help her gain new knowledge and inspiration that she can contribute to the industry when she gets back.

Aside from doing intricately designed bridal gowns and custom-made pieces, Justine also worked in product development for a local RTW brand. She says she has learned a lot from the experience, especially the merchandising part of it. But with the innate love for learning new things, she felt the need to discover the world outside the boundaries of her 9-to-5 job.

In her heart, Justine knew she needed to know more about the fashion industry that embraced her wholeheartedly. So, she applied for a scholarship at a noted fashion school in Paris for her master’s in Contemporary Fashion Design, where she was eventually accepted.

“The whole process of applying for this scholarship was an eye-opening experience for me. I was challenged again and I got excited. Through this journey, I want to learn more about myself as a designer, strengthen and enhance my aesthetic,” says Justine, who graduated with a Fashion and Merchandising degree from the De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde.

Justine says leaving the country for this once-in- alifetime opportunity entails major sacrifices. She hopes this “calculated risk” she took will eventually bear fruit so long as she stays in constant pursuit of learning.

For Justine, now is the right time for aspiring designers to go global as a lot of established Filipino names are paving the way for the new breed of designers to shine on the global stage.

“Never stop dreaming. When you are passionate about something, even if there are a series of unfortunate events that will happen in your life, just go on, do your best and you will eventually reach your dream,” she says.

When a woman like Justine is ready to face the world, it is sort of a celebration of her power to choose what’s best for her, not settling for anything less. There is beauty in this kind of woman who carries herself with confidence, which brings out the best in her and the people around her.
