INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Homeschooling has become a new movement that is changing the education landscape in the country. Mother of two Victoria Villamin-Morales shared her experience in opting to have her children homeschooled.

“I have two kids — one is turning four this month and he has been homeschooled for almost two years already,” said Victoria.

She shared, “Homeschooling can have many approaches, like Waldorf or Montessori type, you can also be independent wherein you don’t follow any curriculum at all. In our case, my husband and I are very committed that the activities we do are geared towards our son becoming independent. So we always bring him along when we go to the bank, when we do errands and when we go to the market. He’s very exposed to that and he helps in cooking, he knows how to clean the house, at the age of three he can already shower on his own.”

For Victoria, it’s important that their children are able to do practical, everyday things on their own so as not to grow up spoiled or entitled. She added that while she wants their son to learn practical skills, they also sing ABCs, play numbers games for an hour as well as read books.

She admitted that homeschooling is also not a walk in the park as there are also “bad days,” when she loses her patience or her son becomes impatient. “That’s another thing, time management is important because it’s hard to run a household.”

Especially now that she already has two children, Victoria says that it’s important that they were already able to establish a routine as for homeschooling to work, it also takes a lot of patience and dedication.

PROVENANCE GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Turning their passion for art into a wonderful business, husband and wife team Raul and Joanna Francisco shared their newest venture, Provenance Art Gallery.

Already successful entrepreneurs, Raul and Joanna have been managing five proudly homegrown retail stores for some years now, “We decided that it would be natural for people to start with appreciating luxurious things for themselves through clothes and bags, naturally the home would follow,” said Joanna. “What’s the best way to accessorize your home or make it your own than to have beautiful art?”

Raul added, “Art is really vibrant, it’s very dynamic. We started off as collectors 13 years ago and at some point last year I shared an idea with Joanna to do a gallery since we love art so much.”

He said they really wanted to create a space with global appeal. The “higher purpose” is to create a platform for Filipino contemporary artists to showcase their work at a global stage.

“It as a great opportunity, and the managers of Shangri-La loved the idea that we were celebrating Filipino Heritage, and that’s how it came to fruition.”

Currently, Provenance is having an exhibit called Convergence which features three fantastic artists: Betsy Westendorp, Cesar Caballero and Ramon Diaz.

“I think people put too much attention in investment, although it is a real thing. But I think one thing we do is that we really have to connect to the artwork. I think it all boils down to your aesthetic, what you gravitate to. Art is very subjective, some people like those really shock value art and they’re so powerful that you don’t want to show to your kids but some like more serene and more calming art,” said Raul.

“We buy with our hearts and our eyes not so much with our ears. We’re certainly not experts but people trust our taste, people trust our vision that we’ve done our homework to look at the path of the artist, so I guess that would be more important to me,” added Joanna.
