Depends on how you look at it

- By FRANCIS J. KONG

A friend of mine was a philosophy major during his first semester in college. One day in a seminar class, they spent a great deal of time debating whether the glass was half full or half empty.

After the class, my friend was feeling pretty good about himself and what he was learning at the university, so when he went home he tried to continue the discussion with his family.

With maximum drama, he took a 12 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured in six ounces of water. He took it into the dining room and placed it on the middle of the table. He proudly asked his family, “Can anyone tell me whether this glass is half full or half empty.”

Without missing a beat, his grandmother replied, “Depends if you’re drinking or pouring.” That’s a smart way to look at it. Here are some “unusual” health advice: Q: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life, is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it... don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer. That’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn and what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of green leafy vegetable. And a pork chop can give you 100 percent of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: How can I calculate my body/ fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No pain... Good! Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you? A: YOU’RE NOT LISTENING! Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach. Q: Is chocolate bad for me? A: Are you crazy? HELLO? Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It’s the best feel-good food around! Q: Is swimming good for your figure? A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me. Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle? A: Hey! ‘Round’ is a shape! As a trainer and a speaker I have realized one thing. We never see things as they are. We always see things as we are. Everything depends on how we see it.

This is why we need to stick to what is truthful because truth is never relative, truth is absolute no matter how we look at it.

The world feeds us and bombards us with non-stop constant negative news. Open your television or news feed and you see the same thing all the time – deaths, murders, terrorism, airplane crashes, financial crisis and political scandals. Humans have a propensity to pay more attention to negative news than to good news and that is why “Bad news sell.”

It’s not that the news media is lying -- it’s just not a balanced view of what’s going on in the world. Because there is a lot of good news around but they just do not sell and increase viewer’s ratings.

Our mindset means a lot. Take care of it. Feed it with good news and inspiring materials in order to live life fully. You and I are not just mere statistics as the media would refer to us someday, but we are created by a Creator who values and loves us and has beautifully and wonderfully made us. This should be the right mindset that should carry us through the day. And for this we live and have our being.
