Ayo has 10 days to fix listless Archers
La Salle coach Aldin Ayo intends to take advantage of the Green Archers’ 10-day break to make some course correction and whip his wards back to their old deadly selves in time for the UAAP LXXIX men’s basketball finals on Dec. 3.
Ayo had expressed in the strongest possible terms his displeasure with the way the Green Archers handled their Final Four outing against No. 4 Adamson last Wednesday, branding it as a “horrible game.” “We have 10 days to prepare.
Iyung mga lapses na ginawa namin sa Final Four, we’ll make sure ma- resolve
namin and siguraduhin namin na (we fix our game and get rid of our lapses so) come Dec. 3, magawa na ang dapat
gawin (we’re able to do what we have to),” said Ayo after DLSU’s 69-64 win over the Falcons.
Ayo slammed the anemic three assists to 26 turnovers ratio of his players in the said game, a clear illustration of how badly their execution was.
“Ang sama ng laro namin ( We played poorly). Coach Glen (Capacio) was comforting me after the game, ang sabi ko, hindi ako papayag na ganunganun lang ang laro kasi hindi ito yung makarating ka lang ng finals, okay na (I told him I won’t tolerate such performance because it’s not just a matter of reaching the finals). It’s all about winning the championship. Sabi ko sa mga bata (I told the players), you have to be accountable and you have to do our part because lahat naman ginagawa natin, yung suporta ng managers, yung practice plan, game-plan, lahat andun na. It’s just a matter of executing those schemes eh,” Ayo said. Ayo’s wakeup call on national TV and inside the pressroom registered loud and clear on his wards.
“It’s down to the last two or three games. If we don’t fix our problem now, there’s a chance we’ll regret kung paano
matapos ang season (how our season will end). And of course, we wouldn’t want that to happen. We’ll do what it takes to win the championship,” said Jeron Teng, who fired a team-high 25 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter in the finals berth-clinching win that saw him committing seven errors in the first half.
The Archers are in the best- ofthree finals for the first time since their championship run in 2013.
Second seed Ateneo and No. 3 defending champion Far Eastern U will take the court for their own Final Four duel tomorrow with the Eagles seeking to cash in on the twice-to-beat semis incentive to join their rivals in the Last Dance.
