Shirley Tan at Arte Pintura
Arte Pintura presents a solo exhibition of recent artworks by Shirley Tan billed as “Gabay sa Panahon.” It opens on Sunday, Dec. 11. A first in Philippine contemporary art, the works are exclusively focused on the subject and image of the lighthouse. The choice of imagery was a given for the artist: she maintains an exhibition space of her works at the Lighthouse Marina Hotel in Subic Freeport Zone in Zambales. The hotel itself features a towering 20-meterhigh lighthouse on the waterfront.
Tan was inspired by the rich symbolism inherent in the lighthouse, which is the running leitmotif in her works. As she herself has experienced the many frustrations and disappointments along the way in order to fulfill her dream of becoming an artist, she too has found her own “lighthouse” in the company and guid- ance of the Arte Pintura Visual Artists Group, of which she has been a member since 2003. In technique, Tan favors a process called “layering” which leads to the build-up of textures, thus appealing both to the senses of sight and touch. “Gabay sa Panahon” runs until Dec. 24.
