The Philippine Star

Welcome to Campus

Do we really have a voice?

This was the fundamental question that came to mind when I was thinking of a project that will allow the academe to express their opinion on things that matter.

As the STAR’s social media head, I have seen how students express their opinion on issues that affect them. They post, tweet, and blog their views on pressing matters – say education as a right, access to healthcare, care for the environment, gender equality, and more. These people have something to say, and it is only right and just to give their voice several column inches.

The STAR has launched several programs that aim to bridge the academe and the industry. Through its LEARN ( Learning Experience Acquired through Reading Newspapers) Project, primary and secondary school students saw the contribution of newspapers in daily academic activities. Through PhilSTAR Journalism Hubs, campus journalists and advisers were able to get professional help from our journalists in the newly built centers for journalism development. Through PhilSTAR Boot Camp, college journalism and communication students were able to experience the real world of journalism industry by becoming our rookie reporters who covered significant events such as the 2016 elections, and President Duterte’s first State of the Nation Address.

Through Campus, our readers of varied age groups and social classes will hear their voice. This page is a platform to air views on things relevant to them. But to be given a platform is also a responsibility: To make a sound opinion that is based on facts and founded by objectivity. This page is a chance to prove that one’s little voice – in a sea of loud and cluttered, oftentimes polarizing opinion – matters.

Campus also hopes to create a new generation of readers and leaders. In an era of sound bites and short attention span, we need, now, more than ever, to create an army of fact-oriented students and teachers. We believe that through this page, we will be able to bring back the love of the printed word.

Campus opens more possibilities of connecting with the academe, especially in promoting responsible and unbiased journalism. We believe that this is also one way to combat the proliferation of fake news and propaganda.

This vision will not be achieved without your help, so we highly encourage everyone in the academe to support this new initiative and share with us your thoughts.

Today, we welcome you to The Philippine STAR Campus.
