The summer cutie splurge
Things that disappear in the summer: the traffic near your school, shirtsleeves, and sadly, your allowance. It wouldn’t be a problem if the two-month agenda involves sitting in the couch, in the dark, on your own. But if spending your free time means going out with friends and staying under the sun, then preparation is key. We came up with a nifty list of things that should be in your summer beach bag, and includes tanning lotion (duh), shimmery eyeshadow (for that extra glo up), and mouthwash (who you gon’ kiss should be your only problem). Just ‘cause some things disappear in the summer, doesn’t mean all the fun should, too.
With your allowance on pause (sigh), here’s a round-up of our favorite summer beauty products.
Sephora Charcoal Exfoliating Wipes
I was able to try this when Sephora launched its Mix & Play Skincare Collection, which includes products made of green tea, yuzu, rose, and even coconut. The charcoal mini collection was probably my favorite — along with coconut — because of the great scent and innovative products. (I mean, they have a black micellar cleansing water. It’s pretty bomb.) The charcoal exfoliating wipes, though, are pretty groundbreaking for me. Imagine your usual makeup remover, but with a rough side. It’ll be easier to slough off makeup and it’ll guarantee getting them outta your pores in no time. Listerine Healthy White Multi-Action Mouthwash
During the launch of this product, I ended up sitting beside celebrity dentist Dr. Steve Mark Gan, who not only thought I was 21 years old (the flattery!) but also told me that people tend to underestimate the power of mouthwash. Besides regular teeth-brushing, using mouthwash prevents a lot of gum diseases that could crop up when we’re older. The Listerine Healthy White Mouthwash not only addresses that, but tastes good, too. Imagine a twist of lemon and salt — all you need is the tequila. Human Nature Lip Scrub
Human Nature is always a fun brand to support because of what it stands for: sustainability in all forms, whether it be about caring for the environment or supporting the livelihood of local communities. Its new campaign called, Switch to Goodness, encourages customers to adopt habits that promote sustainable practices, like better products and even eating better. Among their new summer collection (which includes a super yummy-smelling sunscreen), one of my favorites is their lip scrub. Exfoliating our lips is oft-disregarded but it’s an important step in keep them healthy. Not only is their lip scrub affordable, it also tastes good. Last year, the highlighting trend caught up, making us halfassed versions of the Tin Man. There were ridiculous repercussions (see: the full face of highlighter challenge), but we ain’t complainin’. The Face Shop CC Cooling Cushion
Cushions are one of my favorite new base products because you get decent coverage without a lot of product on your face — and when it’s blazing hot, you really want to be as facially naked as possible. I love the CC Cooling Cushion because it combines my favorite CC cream in a cushion application; you just get the powder puff, press it into the sponge, and pat on your face. The Face Shop offers six different varieties of its cushions, but the CC Cooling variety stands out as a summer fave with SPF 42, 60% moisture cream that provides anti-wrinkling and brightening. Ain’t no cool down like a nice cushion. —MB

Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Lotion
The sun is the best frenemy we can ever ask for this summer. It’s always recommended to put on any form of sunscreen to prevent skin diseases. A personal favorite is Hawaiian Tropic’s tanning lotion because it helps you get the perfect tan after you shake and bake under the sun.
