LOOK YOUTHFUL, DRINK COLLAGEN FROM A POUCH

- By CHONX TIBAJIA

Something about Skin Perfect Collagen Jelly Drink reminds me of grade school baons — it’s sweet and fruity, comes in a cute, travelfriendly pouch that’s the perfect shade of blush. This beauty drink comes on the heels of a bevy of powdered collagen drinks on the market. The thing about those: sometimes the powder doesn’t dissolve completely, which gives you lumpy drinks that can also be ill-tasting, like cold medicine or worse, sweetened fish juice. Depends on the brand. I’ve purchased a few from Japan (Shiseido Collagen Juice was my favorite, taste-wise), and from a Ministop in Vietnam, which I assumed was not really up to par.

Skin Perfect Collagen Jelly Drink does not taste fishy or remotely like a mucolitic — Skin Perfect’s owners Shiela and Pierre Ching made sure. Shiela, who is the poster woman for their product with her glowing skin, says developing the drink’s taste was the most important part of the process. They’ve partnered with Japanese skincare and techonology company Toyo Hakko, which supplies beauty and skincare products to major players in the industry. Toyo Hakko’s Yasunobu Tsukamoto says, “Collagen Jelly Drink is made from Japanese quality collagen, which is 10 times better than China-made drinks.” All they had to worry about was the taste, which is a major factor for customers.

Collagen comes from different sources: fish, pigs, cows and chicken. Skin Perfect uses marine collagen, which means it’s from the skin of fish, the most popular source of late. In the past, collagen was sourced from pigs and cows. Can you imagine? Somehow bovine juice doesn’t sound very appealing. Recent studies show that the body absorbs marine collagen better.

“We really wanted to make a delicious collagen drink, something that you can drink because you like it,” says Shiela. “We went back and forth with Toyo Hakko, developing the taste.” Tsukamoto adds, “We created something sweet for the Filipino taste. In Japan, we like citrusy, slightly sour with the sweet. But for the Philippine market, we made it fruity, like juice.”

This breakthrough — eliminating the fishy aftertaste and smell in the collagen, is one of the things that make the product different. Another is its jelly form, which makes it fun to drink, mess free, and portable. It’s the first jelly collagen drink in the market to date.

Skin Perfect Collagen Jelly Drink contains marine collagen matrix, hyaluronic acid, CoQ10, rose root and pomegranate extracts.

Drinking one 30ml packet a day (a single pack costs P195) for one month will improve skin tone, promote brightness and smoothness, and improve the appearance of wrinkles. It also improves joint health. The product is safe for diabetics and ideally should be taken on an empty stomach. It’s for individuals 30 years and above, but Shiela and Pierre say kids like it, too.
