Mike Adrao’s Malady
Mike Adrao held his fourth solo exhibition titled
Malady at Tin-aw Art Gallery in Makati City recently.
Malady featured charcoalon-paper artworks that were as visually stunning as they were haunting. There were eight large pieces that depicted human figures in jarring states. From afar, the bodies were apparent because of their human outlines. Upon close inspection, however, they were primarily made up of clusters of animal parts, flowers, leaves, waves and various textural formations.
The equally fascinating small studies of the larger artworks were also shown in the recently concluded exhibition. These initial ideas, done with pen and ink, showcased Adrao’s prodigious talent in drawing.
Adrao had his first solo exhibition and residency at Project Space Pilipinas in 2009. In 2012, he had his solo exhibition Decoy, Decay at Tin-aw Art Gallery. He has been a part of group exhibitions in Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. He also participated in the special exhibitions section of Southeast Asia Platform at Art Stage Singapore in 2014 and the Karen H. Montinola Selection at Art Fair Philippines in 2015. He was part of the exhibition Complicated at the Lopez Museum and Library in 2015 and Paper Trails:
Southeast Asian Works on Paper at Sangkring Art Space in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. (Tin-aw Art Gallery is located at U/G Floor, Somerset Olympia Building, Makati Avenue corner Sto. Tomas Street, Makati City. For inquiries, call 892-7522 or e-mail info@tinaw.com or visit www.tin-aw.com.)
