Globe reinforces Boracay coverage

- By LOUELLA DESIDERIO

Globe Telecom Inc. has further reinforced its network coverage in Boracay in time for the expected surge of tourists in the popular destination.

In a statement, Globe said it made use of the multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) technology which can utilize spectrum to handle more users at higher data rates with better reliability to boost mobile data coverage and capacity in Boracay.

Globe said it is the first telco in the country to make use of MIMO.

Based on initial test results, the MIMO technology can provide four times the data capacity of a regular cell site, as well as offer speed of up to six times depending on the number of users.

Globe’s use of the MIMO technology is in line with ongoing efforts to strengthen network coverage in Boracay to prepare for the influx of tourists.

The technology is ideal for places with high demand and where the existing spectrum has reached the maximum capacity.

“The massive MIMO technology is particularly beneficial in providing mobile data capacities in high foot-traffic areas so it is ideal for major tourist destinations like Boracay, as well as in places where a lot of people convene such as stadiums, transport stations, shopping mall, schools and universities, and dense residential areas. Through massive MIMO, we would be able to enhance the internet experience of our customers and cater to their growing connectivity needs,” Joel Agustin, senior vice president for program governance, network technical group at Globe said.

MIMO works with devices which can support the 2600 Megahertz band, one of the frequencies Globe gained access to after purchasing half of the telco assets of San Miguel Corp. last year.

To cater to the consumers’ digital lifestyle, Globe has gone beyond providing telco services and is now giving other offerings to serve the demand for lifestyle and entertainment-driven connectivity requirements such as music, video, gaming, information, commerce, shopping, banking, movies and TV series, and social media.

In line with addressing the customers’ digital needs, Globe has been investing on expanding the data network infrastructure and capacity.
