Match today (Rizal Memorial Stadium) 4 p.m. – FC Meralco Manila vs Ilocos United FC

FC Meralco Manila tries to firm up its hold of the early lead in the Philippines Football League as it plays its first home game against newbie Ilocos United at Rizal Memorial Stadium today.

The Sparks, who opened their campaign with a masterful 5-1 rout of Stallion Laguna on the road, enjoy the edge in the 4 p.m. setto against Ilocos, which battled Davao Aguilas to a 1-1 draw in its first assignment, but the home team won’t underestimate the visitors.

“We can’t expect an easy game,” said Meralco coach Aris Caslib, who has at his disposal a potent roster led by James and Phil Younghusband, Curt Dizon, Milan Nikolic, and Tahj Minniecon.

“We will give it our best and I am sure both teams will play with a lot of heart,” added Caslib.

Sparks captain James Younghusband said the team is on a high after the hot start but stressed there’s still too much work to do.

“We’re really happy with last week’s performance. It’s a long way to go but the win is good for our confidence. We need to keep improving. As a team, we scored goals but we think we can do better,” said the veteran midfielder.

The Ilocos side, led by skipper John Kanayama, and three other former Sparks in goalie Baba Sampana, striker Graham Caygill, and defender Anton Del Rosario, get ready to drop the upset axe.
