Ormoc gives DepEd P1 M for Brigada

- Lalaine Jimenea

ORMOC CITY – The local government of Ormoc City has allotted P 1 million for Brigada Eskwela, a return-to-school activity that relies on community participation to make public schools ready for class opening, said Brigada coordinator Elvin Wenceslao.

Ormoc’s Brigada Eskwela kicked off at the Liloan Elementary School on May 15, with Mayor Richard Gomez in attendance, together with Vice Mayor Leo Carmelo Locsin Jr. and councilors.

Wenceslao said the funds come from the Special Education Fund (SEF) and they are expecting around P500,000 worth of paint to be delivered during the week. The remaining half would be for the last two quarters of the year.

To allocate the funds fairly, small schools will get paint worth P8,000 each, medium-sized schools P10,000 each, large schools P15,333.33 each and extra-large schools P22,500 each.

The remaining monies would also be allocated using the same formula, Wenceslao added.

Eight Ormoc elementary and high schools are vying for the national Brigada Eskwela awards.

For the elementary, these are the T. Aviles Elementary School in Barangay Cagbuhangin (small), Donghol ES (medium), Cogon ES (large) and the Ormoc City Central School (mega).

The high school contenders are Rustico Capahi Sr. Memorial High School (small), Margen NHS (medium), Liloan NHS (large) and the New Ormoc City National High School (mega).

The school sizes were categorized according to the number of teachers it has, Wenceslao said.

For the elementary, small was those with up to nine teachers, medium with 10-25, large with 26-50 and mega, those with 51 up to 100.

For high school, small were those with 1-25 teachers, medium were those with 26-50, large with 51- 100 and mega, with 101 and more.

The Ormoc City DepEd Division got 73 new teachers’ slots to fill in the gap for the second year of senior high school. —
