Heroes’ pics to replace Rody’s in gov’t offices

- – With Alexis Romero

Displaying portraits of politicians is silly, so President Duterte wants his pictures removed from government offices and replaced with photos of national heroes.

“I intend to also issue a decree – ipatanggal ko iyong mga litrato namin (to have our photos removed),” he said yesterday during the turnover of pistols to the military at Malacañang. “Nabuang man iyong mga ganoon na tao (Those people are insane). Put your family photos in your living room.”

Duterte said he also prohibited the display of his photos when he was mayor of Davao City.

“I told my (Department of Education, Culture and Sports) there to display instead the pictures of our heroes,” he said.

Duterte said he wants national heroes, not corrupt politicians,

to be the model for children.

“Gusto ko iyong mga hero natin, na maemulate ng mga bata. Eh iyong iba diyan na picture, limang beses dumaan ng graft and corruption sa kaso eh (I want our heroes to be emulated by the children. Those people in the photos faced graft and corruption charges five times),” he added.

During his early days as President, Duterte ordered state agencies not to use “Your Excellency” when addressing him in official communications, events or materials.

Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella had said the dropping of honorific titles was consistent with Duterte’s “populist presidential style.”
