Scholarships for aspiring teachers

- – Janvic Mateo

Social enterprise Edukasyon.ph has partnered with the Philippine Business for Education to establish an online application system for the Scholarships for Teacher Education Programs to Upgrade Teacher Quality in the Philippines (STEP UP).

Soon, young professionals who are interested to become teachers may apply online for a scholarship program offering as much as P140,000 in benefits covering tuition and miscel- laneous fees, monthly stipend, dormitory fees and relocation allowance.

Funded by the Australian government under its Basic Education Sector Transformation program, STEP UP aims to attract good-performing college graduates and professionals into the teaching profession by offering them competitive scholarship packages.

Graduates of bachelor’s degrees, except education, who have at least an 85-percent gen- eral weighted average (GWA) are qualified to apply.

Successful applicants will have to take necessary subjects that will allow them to take the licensure examination for teachers.

They can enroll in the following partner institutions: Ateneo de Naga University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, West Visayas State University, Cebu Normal University, Philippine Normal University and Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan.

After passing the examination, scholars are required to teach in a public school for at least three years.

Requirements include a duly accomplished STEP UP application form that can be found at http://bit.ly/edukasyonstepup, undergraduate transcript of records; certificate of GWA, and two recommendation forms from the applicant’s teachers or employers.
